Weekly test of equipment

C2. Ship operations, crewing and technical management

Definition

Recorded tests of safety equipment.

A weekly test of equipment is the recorded routine check of safety and emergency systems required on a seven-day interval by SOLAS and the ship’s safety management system. SOLAS Chapter III requires weekly testing of the general emergency alarm and the public address system, and the emergency generator is started and tested weekly. Lifeboat and rescue-boat engines are run weekly, and the GMDSS radio installation is tested weekly per SOLAS Chapter IV. Each test is logged in the official log book or the planned maintenance system. Port state control checks these records and treats missing or falsified entries as a deficiency.
