The American Sailing Association is a US recreational-sailing education and certification body, founded in 1983 by Lenny Shabes, headquartered in Marina del Rey, California. It accredits sailing schools and instructors and issues a standards ladder from Basic Keelboat (ASA 101) through coastal and offshore cruising certifications recognized for bareboat charter worldwide. ASA is a commercial certifying organization, distinct from US Sailing, the country’s national governing body for the racing sport.
