The word’s origin is the Dutch jacht, a fast hunting or pursuit boat. In law and in the leisure market the term spans everything from a small sailing keelboat through cruiser-racers to large motor and sailing superyachts, with EU recreational craft up to 24 meters governed by Directive 2013/53/EU.
