Baltic Panamax Index (BPI)

The Baltic Exchange freight-rate index for Panamax dry-bulk carriers, vessels of about 74,000 to 82,000 deadweight tonnes sized to the original Panama Canal locks. The BPI is assessed daily from a basket of grain and coal time-charter routes reported by Baltic Exchange panelists. It carries 30% of the Baltic Dry Index under the March 2018 weighting, equal to the Supramax index and below the Capesize index’s 40%.
