Senior engineer in charge of machinery.

The chief engineer heads the engine department and holds the STCW Regulation III/2 chief engineer Certificate of Competency for ships powered by main propulsion machinery of 3,000 kW or more. The post carries management-level responsibility under STCW Code Table A-III/2 for the propulsion plant, auxiliary machinery, electrical systems, and bunkers, and is the technical counterpart to the master. The chief engineer answers to the master for the safe operation of machinery and to the owner’s superintendent for maintenance and surveys.
