Second Engineer

The second engineer is the chief engineer’s deputy and the working head of the engine room, holding the STCW Regulation III/2 second engineer Certificate of Competency for main propulsion of 3,000 kW or more. The post runs the daily engine-room routine: maintenance planning, fuel and lube oil management, and supervision of the junior engineers and ratings. It is the management-level grade between engineer officer of the watch and chief engineer.
