EEBD
A2. Maritime safety legislation: SOLAS and its codesDefinition
Emergency Escape Breathing Device, required under SOLAS II-2/13.
An emergency escape breathing device (EEBD) is a short-duration self-contained air supply, typically rated for 10 minutes or more, that lets crew escape a smoke-filled or oxygen-deficient space, not for fire-fighting or entry. SOLAS II-2/13.3.4 and II-2/13.4 require EEBDs in accommodation, machinery, and other spaces, with the number and location set by the chapter and the FSS Code chapter 3. The device must meet the performance standard in the FSS Code, which SOLAS II-2/3 makes mandatory. EEBDs are marked, maintained, and counted on the Cargo Ship Safety Equipment Certificate Record of Equipment.
