Escape Route
A2. Maritime safety legislation: SOLAS and its codesDefinition
Required under SOLAS II-2/13.
An escape route is a protected means of egress that lets persons reach the embarkation deck and survival craft from any normally occupied space, with at least two separate routes from most spaces. SOLAS II-2/13 sets the means-of-escape requirements: dimensions, protection by fire boundaries, low-location lighting, and the prohibition of dead-end corridors beyond set limits. The FSS Code and the Fire Safety Systems requirements support it. Passenger ships carrying more than 36 passengers face additional escape provisions under II-2/13. Escape routes are shown on the fire control plan posted under SOLAS II-2/15 and verified at the equipment survey.
