EEXI (Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index)

D6. Decarbonization, emissions and alternative fuels

Definition

IMO design efficiency metric for existing ships.

The Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index extends the EEDI design standard to ships already in service, requiring every vessel above 400 GT to meet a required CO2-per-tonne-mile value from the first survey after 1 January 2023. Owners typically comply by limiting engine power (EPL or ShaPoLi) rather than rebuilding, which caps speed. EEXI is a one-time design check, paired with the operational Carbon Intensity Indicator that rates a ship’s actual emissions year by year.
