STCW-regulated specialty for shipboard electrical and electronic systems.
The electro-technical officer is the STCW-regulated specialty for shipboard electrical, electronic, and control systems, certificated under Regulation III/6 with the competence standard in Code Table A-III/6. The 2010 Manila amendments to STCW created the ETO grade to recognize the growing electrical complexity of modern ships: high-voltage systems, automation, and integrated bridge and engine controls. The ETO works within the engine department under the chief engineer, alongside the watchkeeping engineers.
