Enclosed-Space Entry Drill
A2. Maritime safety legislation: SOLAS and its codesDefinition
Required under SOLAS III/19.
An enclosed-space entry and rescue drill is the mandatory periodic exercise in which crew practice safe entry, atmosphere testing, and rescue from confined spaces such as tanks, cofferdams, and holds. SOLAS III/19.3.3, added by resolution MSC.350(92) and in force from 1 January 2015, requires the drill at least once every two months, covering checking and use of breathing apparatus, communications, instructions on atmosphere testing, and rescue procedures. It responds to a long record of fatalities from oxygen-deficient or toxic atmospheres. The drill complements the company’s enclosed-space entry procedures required under the ISM Code safety management system.
