Entry-level engine officer rank.

The junior engineer, sometimes called fourth or fifth engineer, is the entry-level engine officer, holding or working toward the STCW Regulation III/1 engineer officer of the watch certificate. The post handles assigned auxiliary machinery, watch support, and the practical training that leads to an unrestricted operational-level certificate. It is the first officer grade an engine cadet reaches after the sea phase and the OOW engine examination.
