Fire Patrol

A2. Maritime safety legislation: SOLAS and its codes

Definition

Required on passenger ships under SOLAS II-2/7.

A fire patrol is the continuous human watch SOLAS requires on passenger ships so that an outbreak of fire is detected early in spaces not covered by fixed detection. SOLAS II-2/7.8 requires an efficient fire patrol on passenger ships carrying more than 36 passengers, so any outbreak in accommodation, service, and control spaces is promptly discovered, with patrol members trained in the ship’s arrangements and equipped to raise the alarm. The patrol supplements, and does not replace, the fixed fire detection and alarm system required for these spaces. It is part of the operational fire-safety regime audited under the ISM Code.
