Fire Test Procedures (FTP) Code

A2. Maritime safety legislation: SOLAS and its codes

Definition

2010 FTP Code, mandatory under SOLAS II-2/3.

The Fire Test Procedures (FTP) Code is the mandatory standard prescribing how materials and components are fire-tested for approval before use aboard ship. The 2010 FTP Code was adopted by resolution MSC.307(88) on 3 December 2010 and entered into force 1 July 2012, made mandatory by SOLAS II-2/3.23. It specifies the laboratory test methods for non-combustibility, smoke and toxicity, surface flammability, A and B class divisions, and fire-door and furniture tests that underpin SOLAS Chapter II-2 structural fire protection. A material certified to the FTP Code carries type-approval accepted by flag States and recognized organizations.
