Initial GHG Strategy 2018 (IMO)

D6. Decarbonization, emissions and alternative fuels

Definition

First IMO climate strategy, since revised in 2023.

The Initial IMO GHG Strategy was the first IMO climate policy for international shipping, adopted by resolution MEPC.304(72) on 13 April 2018. It set a 2008 baseline and aimed to cut carbon intensity per transport work by at least 40% by 2030, and to reduce total annual GHG emissions by at least 50% by 2050, while pursuing phase-out. It is superseded: the 2023 IMO GHG Strategy, adopted by resolution MEPC.377(80) on 7 July 2023, revoked it from the same date and raised the ambition to net-zero by or around 2050 with 2030 and 2040 checkpoints.
