LEO Satcom (Starlink, OneWeb)
E3. Technology, digitalization and smart shippingDefinition
Low-earth-orbit broadband constellations.
Low-earth-orbit satellite constellations such as Starlink and OneWeb deliver maritime broadband from satellites a few hundred kilometers up, cutting latency to tens of milliseconds and lifting throughput far above legacy geostationary VSAT. The low latency enables remote diagnostics, real-time performance analytics, cloud applications, and crew welfare connectivity, and underpins the data links that remotely operated and autonomous ships require. Operators commonly pair LEO with L-band services for a resilient fallback.
