80th session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee, adopting the 2023 GHG Strategy.
MEPC 80, the 80th session of the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee in July 2023, adopted the revised GHG Strategy committing international shipping to net-zero by or around 2050 with 2030 and 2040 checkpoints. It set the agenda to develop mid-term measures, a goal-based marine fuel standard and a greenhouse-gas pricing mechanism, for adoption by 2025. MEPC 80 is the reference point cited for the sector’s current decarbonization ambition.
