GHG Strategy 2023 (IMO)

The 2023 IMO GHG Strategy, adopted at MEPC 80, sets the sector’s climate ambition: net-zero greenhouse gas emissions from international shipping by or around 2050, with indicative checkpoints of 20 to 30% reduction by 2030 and 70 to 80% by 2040 against 2008. It replaced the weaker 2018 initial strategy and committed the IMO to adopt mid-term measures, the technical fuel-intensity standard and an economic pricing element that became the 2025 Net-Zero Framework.
