Passenger Vessel SOLAS Chapter II-2/13

E4. Cruise, offshore energy and auxiliary/specialised fleets

Definition

Safe-return-to-port regulation post 2010.

Safe Return to Port is the SOLAS regulatory concept, introduced through Chapter II-2 and II-1 amendments effective from 1 July 2010 for passenger ships of 120 meters or more or with three or more main vertical zones, that treats the ship as its own best lifeboat. After a fire or flooding casualty below a defined threshold, essential systems must keep working so the ship can return to port under its own power with people safely aboard, rather than relying on evacuation at sea.
