Penalty Turn
F4. Recreational Boating, Yachting and SportDefinition
Racing penalty under the World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing.
A penalty turn is the on-the-water self-penalty a boat takes to exonerate itself after breaking a rule of Part 2 of the Racing Rules of Sailing. The standard is the Two-Turns Penalty, two full 360-degree turns including two tacks and two gybes, taken promptly and well clear of other boats; a touch of a mark is answered by a One-Turn Penalty. Taking the turn lets a boat that infringed continue racing without facing a protest, provided it gained no lasting advantage.
