Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS)
F4. Recreational Boating, Yachting and SportDefinition
World Sailing rulebook updated quadrennially.
The Racing Rules of Sailing are World Sailing’s rulebook, revised on a four-year cycle aligned with the Olympic quadrennium; the current edition runs 2025 to 2028. Part 2, When Boats Meet, carries the right-of-way rules every racing sailor must know: a port-tack boat keeps clear of a starboard-tack boat, and when overlapped on the same tack the windward boat keeps clear of the leeward boat. Other parts cover the conduct of a race, mark-room, protests and redress, and class and event regulations. Breaches are answered by a penalty turn or, in some events, a scoring penalty.
