PPR Sub-Committee

A1. The IMO and the international regulatory framework

Definition

Sub-Committee on Pollution Prevention and Response.

The Sub-Committee on Pollution Prevention and Response (PPR) is the IMO body responsible for MARPOL Annexes I to VI technical work, ballast-water and biofouling management, air-pollution and fuel-quality matters, and oil and chemical pollution preparedness under the OPRC regime. It reports to the MEPC. PPR first met in 2014, taking over the environmental work of the disbanded BLG Sub-Committee and the OPRC technical group under the 2013 restructuring. It develops emission and discharge requirements for adoption by the MEPC but adopts no instruments itself.
