Safety committee meeting

C2. Ship operations, crewing and technical management

Definition

Monthly meeting required by MLC and ISM.

A safety committee meeting is the periodic onboard forum where the master, officers, and ratings review safety, occupational health, and SMS performance. MLC 2006 Regulation 4.3 and Standard A4.3 require a ship safety committee on vessels with five or more seafarers, and company SMS procedures under ISM Code section 5 typically set a monthly cycle. The committee reviews near-miss and incident reports, risk assessments, drill results, audit and inspection findings, and crew safety suggestions, then records minutes and corrective actions. Output feeds the ISM Code section 9 analysis loop and the safety officer’s program. Minutes are an audit and port state control reference.
