SCBA
C2. Ship operations, crewing and technical managementDefinition
Self-contained breathing apparatus.
SCBA, self-contained breathing apparatus, is a portable air supply worn by firefighters and rescuers in atmospheres that are toxic, oxygen-deficient, or smoke-filled. SOLAS Chapter II-2 Regulation 10 and the FSS Code require fireman’s outfits, each including an SCBA with a cylinder holding at least 1,200 liters of free air or capable of at least 30 minutes. Ships carry spare charges and a means to recharge cylinders. SCBA is also used for enclosed space entry and rescue where the atmosphere cannot be made safe. Cylinders, masks, and bypass valves are checked monthly, and crew train in donning and use during fire and enclosed space drills.
