Sea Cargo Charter

Framework for charterers to align with IMO climate goals.
The Sea Cargo Charter, launched in 2020, is a voluntary framework that lets charterers and shipowners measure and disclose how the carbon intensity of their chartering activities aligns with the IMO greenhouse gas reduction trajectory. Signatories calculate an annual alignment score for their chartered shipping using emissions data and a declining trajectory, mirroring the Poseidon Principles applied to ship finance. It pushes commercial demand toward more efficient tonnage and is overseen by the same Global Maritime Forum secretariat. It complements, rather than substitutes for, the IMO and EU regulatory measures.
