Semi-Submersible MODU
E4. Cruise, offshore energy and auxiliary/specialised fleetsDefinition
Pontoon-and-column floating drilling rig.
A semi-submersible mobile offshore drilling unit is a floating rig supported by large submerged pontoons and connected to the working deck by columns, so most of the buoyancy sits below the wave zone and the platform stays stable in deep water and heavy seas. It holds position by spread mooring or dynamic positioning. Semi-submersibles drill in water depths beyond a jack-up’s reach, and the same hull form is used for crane and accommodation vessels. They are built to the IMO MODU Code.
