Jack-Up Rig

E4. Cruise, offshore energy and auxiliary/specialised fleets

Definition

MODU with retractable legs deployed to seabed.

A jack-up rig is a mobile offshore drilling unit with a buoyant hull and three or more retractable legs that are lowered to the seabed and then used to jack the hull clear of the water onto a stable working platform. It works in shallow to moderate water, commonly to around 120 to 150 meters, beyond which floating units take over. Jack-up designs are also used for offshore wind turbine installation. Construction and equipment follow the IMO MODU Code.
