E-Navigation (IMO)

E3. Technology, digitalization and smart shipping

Definition

IMO strategy integrating ship/shore information services.

E-navigation is the IMO strategy, endorsed in 2014, to harmonize the collection, exchange, and display of marine information aboard ship and ashore through electronic means, to improve safety and efficiency. It defines a set of Maritime Service Portfolios delivered through standardized data structures, with the Maritime Connectivity Platform providing identity and service discovery. VDES, S-100 charts, and route exchange are the technical pillars that carry the strategy from concept toward operational services.
