ISO 12217

F4. Recreational Boating, Yachting and Sport

Definition

Standard for stability and buoyancy assessment of small craft.

ISO 12217 specifies the methods for assessing the intact stability and buoyancy of small craft and assigning them to RCD design category A, B, C, or D. It comes in three parts: Part 1 for non-sailing boats of 6 m and over, Part 2 for sailing boats of 6 m and over, and Part 3 for boats under 6 m. The tests cover downflooding height, the offset-load and recovery-from-knockdown checks, and resistance to swamping. It is the harmonized standard most builders use to demonstrate the stability essential requirement of the Recreational Craft Directive.
