LPG carrier (FR/SR/PR)
B5. Ship Types and Individual VesselsDefinition
Fully refrigerated, semi-refrigerated, fully pressurized.
LPG carriers move propane, butane, and ammonia in one of three containment regimes set by how the cargo’s vapor pressure is contained. Fully pressurized ships carry the cargo at ambient temperature in thick pressure vessels, suited to small coastal parcels. Semi-refrigerated ships combine moderate pressure with cooling. Fully refrigerated ships carry large parcels at near-atmospheric pressure and low temperature in insulated prismatic tanks, the configuration of the VLGC class of about 84,000 cubic meters that dominates long-haul LPG trades.
