Gas carrier (LNGC, LEG, LPGC, FGC)

B5. Ship Types and Individual Vessels

Definition

IGC types.

Gas carriers transport liquefied gases under the IGC Code and split by cargo and containment: LNG carriers move methane at minus 163 degrees in membrane or spherical tanks; LPG carriers move propane and butane, fully refrigerated, semi-refrigerated, or fully pressurized; LEG carriers move ethylene at minus 104 degrees in semi-refrigerated tanks; and smaller fully pressurized gas carriers serve coastal trades. The containment type follows the cargo’s boiling point and vapor pressure, which set whether the cargo is carried cold at atmospheric pressure, under pressure at ambient temperature, or in between.
