Motor Engineer's Cert

F3. Seafaring Life, Education, Professions and Institutions

Definition

STCW engine-officer qualification.

An engine-officer certificate of competency restricted to motor (internal-combustion, diesel) propulsion, as opposed to a steam endorsement. Under STCW 1978 (as amended) the certificate of competency for engineer officers, Regulations III/1 to III/3, can carry a propulsion limitation; historically UK and Commonwealth certificates were issued as Motor, Steam, or combined endorsements. A motor engineer’s certificate authorizes watchkeeping or charge of machinery on diesel-engined ships up to the certificate’s power and voyage limits.
