IoT Reference Architecture (ISO 19847/19848)

E3. Technology, digitalization and smart shipping

Definition

Standards for shipboard data servers and sensor metadata.

The shipboard IoT reference architecture pairs two ISO standards: ISO 19847:2018 specifies the shipboard data server that collects field data from machinery and systems and shares it safely and efficiently, and ISO 19848:2018 defines the standard data structure (naming of equipment and data channels) that the server uses. Together they let sensor data from different vendors’ engines, pumps, and instruments be captured, named consistently, and consumed by analytics, performance, and shore-reporting software without bespoke integration. Both were published in October 2018; ISO 19847 was revised in 2024. They form the data backbone beneath asset-performance and fleet-performance platforms.
