Radar Carriage: SOLAS V/19 requirement for one or two 9 GHz radars depending on ship size, with 3 GHz radar required above 3,000 GT.
Raster Chart: A pixel-based digital chart; ARCS and BSB/KAP are widely used raster formats.
Raytheon Anschutz: Kiel based manufacturer of gyrocompasses, autopilots, and integrated navigation systems, founded in 1905 by Hermann Anschutz Kaempfe.

Route monitoring: ECDIS function for monitoring vessel against the planned route.
RTCM SC-104: The Radio Technical Commission for Maritime Services special committee responsible for DGNSS standards.
Rudder angle indicator: Bridge display showing rudder position.

S-57 ENC: Vector chart in IHO S-57 format used by ECDIS, the dominant ENC standard prior to S-101.
S-63 Encryption: IHO chart protection scheme requiring user permits and cell permits for chart decryption.
SafetyNET: Inmarsat-C broadcast service for MSI to selected sea or NAVAREAs.
Sailor 4300: Cobham Iridium Certus 700 broadband terminal for global maritime IP service.
Sailor 6110: Cobham Inmarsat-C mini-C terminal certified for GMDSS distress alerting.

Target Tracking: Automatic radar function maintaining track files on detected targets, supporting ARPA and TT functionality.
TG-8500: Tokyo Keiki fiber-optic gyrocompass providing heading and rate-of-turn outputs to bridge systems.
TGI-1: Tokyo Keiki spinning-mass gyrocompass commonly fitted on Japanese-built merchant vessels.
THD: Total harmonic distortion, expressed as a percentage of the fundamental voltage or current.
THR: Transmitting Heading Repeater, used in INS architectures to distribute heading data.
Tidetech: A provider of high resolution ocean current, tide, and meteorological data used in weather routing and offshore operations.
Tokyo Keiki TT-21: Tokyo Keiki ECDIS model certified to IEC 61174 for SOLAS vessels.
Track control system: ECDIS-coupled track autopilot per MSC.74(69).
Transas: Russian and Irish bridge equipment maker acquired by Wartsila in 2018, producing Navi-Sailor and Navi-Planner.
Transducer Well: Hull penetration housing speed-log and echo-sounder transducers.
Transmission Type Approval: Wheelmark or equivalent flag-state certification under the Marine Equipment Directive 2014/90/EU.
True Motion: Radar display mode where own ship moves across the screen with a fixed reference frame.
TXRX: Common abbreviation for radar transmitter-receiver, located in the mast assembly.
Type approval: Statutory or class approval of equipment design used onboard.

U

UAIS: Universal AIS, the formal ITU term distinguishing the standardized system from earlier proprietary systems.
UKHO: United Kingdom Hydrographic Office, publisher of Admiralty charts.
UPS: Uninterruptible power supply providing battery-backed power to navigation, communication, and automation systems.
User Permit: Unique alphanumeric string identifying an ECDIS in the IHO S-63 chart-protection scheme.

V

VDR: Voyage Data Recorder, required under SOLAS V/20.
VDR Float Free Capsule: Capsule fitted with a hydrostatic release unit designed to float free of a sinking vessel and broadcast a 406 MHz locating signal.
Vector Chart: Layered digital chart used in ECDIS.
VHF DSC: Channel 70 Digital Selective Calling for short range distress alerting.
VisionMaster FT: Sperry Marine integrated bridge platform combining ECDIS, radar, and conning multi function displays.
Voyage Optimization: A planning function that adjusts route, speed, and trim for fuel and time efficiency on MASS.
Voyage Plan: Required under SOLAS V/34.
VR-7000: Furuno VDR meeting the revised IMO Resolution MSC.333(90) performance standard.
VR-7000S: Furuno Simplified Voyage Data Recorder variant of the VR-7000 for cargo ships under 3,000 GT.
VTS: Vessel Traffic Service, IMO Resolution A.857(20).

W

WAAS: Wide Area Augmentation System, the US SBAS service.
Wartsila NACOS Platinum: Integrated bridge, automation, and power management product line from Wartsila SAM Electronics.
Wartsila Voyage: Business unit of Wartsila that integrates the former Transas portfolio, including NTPRO 5000 simulators and ECDIS products.
Weather routing: Optimum-track routing per environmental forecasts.
Weathernews Inc: WNI Japanese marine weather services provider offering ship routing and voyage performance analytics.
Wheelhouse poster: SOLAS Chapter V manoeuvring information.
Wheelmark: Conformity mark required for marine equipment placed on the EU market under Directive 2014/90/EU.
WNI: Weathernews Inc, a major Asian provider of voyage routing and onboard weather services.
Workstation: ECDIS or radar console designed as a multifunction node within an IBS.

X

X Band SART: SART responding to 9 GHz radar pulses.
X-band: 8 to 12 GHz radar band (9.2 to 9.5 GHz for marine radar and Racons).
XTE: Cross-Track Error displayed by ECDIS and autopilots indicating perpendicular distance from the planned route.

Y

Yagi Antenna: Directional VHF antenna form used in legacy MF and HF maritime communications shore installations.
Yokogawa CMZ900: Yokogawa Denshikiki autopilot family widely fitted on Japanese-built commercial vessels.
Yokogawa CMZ900D: Yokogawa fluid-suspended gyrocompass variant in the CMZ900 family with digital interface.
Yokogawa Denshikiki: Japanese maker of marine gyrocompasses, autopilots, and steering control systems based in Tokyo.

Z

ZDA Sentence: NMEA 0183 sentence transmitting UTC time and date for time synchronization across bridge equipment.
Zero Speed Log: Doppler log capable of providing accurate speed at very low or zero speed-through-water, important for berthing.
Zone of Confidence: ZOC, the qualitative classification of survey reliability encoded in S-57 attribute CATZOC and visualised on ENCs.
