Reefer Containers and Cold Chain Shipping glossary

The reefer-refrigerant vocabulary: the ASHRAE Standard 34 refrigerant safety classes (A1, A2L, A3), active and controlled atmosphere, fresh-air management (AFAM+), and the HFC phase-down and machinery terms. Grounds each term in the refrigerant class or the reefer technology it belongs to, complementing the cold-chain logistics section.

A1 refrigerant class: ASHRAE Standard 34 safety designation for non-flammable refrigerants with lower toxicity, including R-134a, R-404A, R-407C, and R-507A used historically in marine reefer containers.
A2L refrigerant class: ASHRAE Standard 34 designation for mildly flammable, lower-toxicity refrigerants such as R-1234yf and R-32, relevant to next-generation reefer machinery under HFC phase-down.
A3 refrigerant class: ASHRAE Standard 34 designation for highly flammable refrigerants including R-290 propane and R-1270 propylene, generally restricted in marine container service.
Active controlled atmosphere: Reefer technology that injects nitrogen and modulates oxygen and carbon dioxide concentrations inside the container to slow produce respiration.
AFAM+: Maersk Container Industry active fresh air management system that automates ventilation rate based on carbon dioxide buildup inside a reefer container.
Air Exchange Rate: Number of hold-air changes per hour by ventilators; key to ventilation design.
Albacora: Specialized reefer vessel operator historically active in the tuna and frozen fish trades from the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.
Ambient temperature: Outside air temperature surrounding the reefer; influences pull-down time and compressor duty cycle.
Americold: United States headquartered cold storage operator providing temperature-controlled warehousing and port-adjacent reefer logistics services worldwide.
Ammonia Refrigerant: R-717 used in industrial fish factory and large refrigeration plants for its high efficiency.
Apple reefer carriage: Pomaceous fruit shipped at approximately zero to plus one degree Celsius with controlled atmosphere to extend storage life across long ocean voyages.
ASHRAE 34: Refrigerant designation and safety classification standard defining A1, A2L, A3, B1 etc.
Asparagus reefer carriage: Perishable vegetable carried at about plus two degrees Celsius with high humidity and elevated air exchange to prevent spear toughening.
ATALANTA: EU NAVFOR counter-piracy operation off Somalia, launched December 2008 and extended to 2026.
Atmospheric injection: Process by which nitrogen or carbon dioxide is dosed into a controlled-atmosphere reefer container to displace oxygen.
Avocado reefer carriage: Subtropical fruit transported between plus four and plus seven degrees Celsius with controlled atmosphere to delay ripening during transit.

B

Banana carriage temperature: Industry-standard pulp temperature of approximately plus 13.3 degrees Celsius maintained throughout the reefer voyage from Latin America or West Africa to consuming markets.
Banana ripening: Post-arrival process in temperature-controlled rooms using ethylene gas to convert green bananas to consumer-yellow stage.
Beef reefer carriage: Chilled beef shipped at minus 1.5 to plus 1.5 degrees Celsius, frozen beef at minus 18 degrees Celsius or colder, often in vacuum or modified atmosphere packaging.
Blast freezing: Rapid freezing of cargo to core temperatures below minus 18 degrees Celsius prior to stowage in a reefer container.
Box ventilation: Setting of the fresh-air vent on a reefer container, expressed in cubic meters per hour, calibrated to commodity respiration.
Breadfruit carriage: Tropical commodity carried at around plus 13 degrees Celsius to avoid chilling injury.
Broccoli reefer carriage: Cruciferous vegetable transported at about zero degrees Celsius with high humidity and modified atmosphere to preserve floret color.
Butter reefer carriage: Dairy product transported chilled at plus two to plus four degrees Celsius or frozen at minus 18 degrees Celsius for long voyages.

CA technology: Controlled atmosphere systems inside reefer containers that actively regulate oxygen, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen levels.

Compressor: Mechanical component of a reefer unit that compresses refrigerant vapor, driving the vapor-compression refrigeration cycle.
Container plug-in point: Electrical outlet on quay, yard, or vessel deck supplying typically 440-volt three-phase 60 Hz power to a reefer unit.
Controlled atmosphere: Active management of internal container gas composition through nitrogen injection and selective ventilation to extend produce shelf life.
Cool Carriers: Sweden-based specialist conventional reefer operator providing chartering and pool management for refrigerated ships.
Cummins ReeferGen: Family of clip-on diesel generator sets manufactured by Cummins for powering reefer containers on chassis and railcars.

D

Data logger: Standalone or embedded device recording temperature, humidity, and sometimes gas composition.
Deep frozen cargo: Commodities such as tuna and certain seafood carried at minus 25 degrees Celsius or colder, sometimes to minus 60 degrees Celsius in specialty units.
Defrost cycle: Periodic evaporator heating to clear frost; initiated by timer, demand sensor, or pressure differential.
Del Monte: United States headquartered producer and shipper of bananas, pineapples, and other fresh produce moving in reefer containers and conventional reefer vessels.
Dole Food Company: United States headquartered producer and shipper of bananas and pineapples, historically operating its own conventional reefer fleet.
Dwell time: duration containers or cargo remain in the terminal.

E

eFleet: ZIM Integrated Shipping Services digital platform offering reefer cargo visibility, including temperature and event alerts.
Ethylene management: Removal or generation of ethylene gas inside a reefer container to delay or trigger ripening of climacteric produce.
EU F-Gas Regulation: European Union Regulation 517/2014 and its 2024 revision restricting the placing on market and use of fluorinated greenhouse gases including HFC refrigerants.
Evaporator: Fresh water generator using waste heat from jacket water at low vacuum.

F

F-Gas: European Union shorthand for fluorinated greenhouse gases regulated under Regulation 517/2014 and successor instruments.
Factory Trawler: Stern trawler with onboard processing.
Fish reefer carriage: Carriage of frozen fish at minus 25 to minus 18 degrees Celsius or chilled fresh fish on ice or in modified atmosphere at zero to plus two degrees Celsius.
Fresh-air ventilation: Setting on a reefer that admits outside air to dilute carbon dioxide and ethylene produced by respiring produce.
Frialsa: Mexican cold storage operator providing refrigerated warehousing and distribution services.
Frozen cargo: Product carried at -12 C or colder; common setpoints -18 C, -25 C, -29 C.

G

Gen-set: Diesel-powered generator unit clipped onto a reefer container or chassis to supply electrical power during road or rail transport.
Globe Tracker: Vendor of satellite reefer telematics and CA monitoring devices.
Grape reefer carriage: Table grapes typically shipped at minus 0.5 to zero degrees Celsius, often with sulfur dioxide generator pads to control gray mold.
Great White Fleet: Historic Chiquita Brands fleet of refrigerated banana vessels operating in the Latin America to North America and Europe trades.
GWP: Global Warming Potential, the relative climate impact of a refrigerant compared with carbon dioxide over 100 years, central to HFC phase-down policy.

H

HFC: Hydrofluorocarbon refrigerant family including R-134a, R-404A, R-407C, and R-507A, subject to phase-down under the Kigali Amendment.
HFO: Heavy fuel oil, residual marine fuel grade per ISO 8217 RMG and RMK.
High-cube reefer: 40-foot or 45-foot reefer container with internal height of approximately 2.55 meters, predominant in ocean reefer trades.
Humidity control: Active management of relative humidity inside a reefer container, typically between 65 and 95 percent depending on commodity.

U-value: Overall heat transfer coefficient of a reefer container's envelope, expressed in watts per square meter kelvin, a key insulation performance metric.
USDA cold treatment: United States Department of Agriculture phytosanitary regime requiring specified low temperatures to be held for defined periods during transit.

V

Vaccine reefer carriage: Pharmaceutical product shipped within validated temperature ranges, commonly plus two to plus eight degrees Celsius, or in ultra-low freezers for selected vaccines.
Vapor-compression cycle: Thermodynamic cycle used in reefer machinery, comprising compressor, condenser, expansion device, and evaporator.
Ventilation setting: Fresh-air vent opening expressed in m3/hr or CFM.

Z

40-foot high-cube reefer: Predominant ocean reefer container, 12.19 meters long and approximately 2.90 meters external height, used across most deep-sea perishable trades.
40-foot standard reefer: 40-foot reefer container with standard external height of approximately 2.59 meters, less common than the high-cube variant in modern fleets.
45-foot reefer: Reefer container with nominal length of 13.72 meters, used in selected intermodal services where road regulations permit.
