Marine Coatings, Antifouling, and Hull Husbandry glossary (page 2)

Vocabulary of marine coatings and hull maintenance: ablative and self-polishing copolymer antifoulings, anti-corrosive primers and airless spray application, the AFS Convention controlling harmful anti-fouling systems and its MEPC.334(76) cybutryne ban, and the biocide-release, surface-preparation and hull-husbandry terminology of protective marine paint systems.

289 defined terms.

Showing 39 on this page (page 2 of 2).

S

Stripe coat
Brush- or roller-applied coat on welds and edges added to ensure adequate film thickness at geometric discontinuities.

Belgian manufacturer of Ecospeed glass-flake biocide-free hard hull coatings and propeller coatings.
Surface profile
Roughness pattern produced by abrasive blasting and measured by profile gauge or replica tape.
Surface-Tolerant Epoxy
Epoxy coating formulated to provide acceptable performance over hand or power tool cleaned surfaces with residual tightly adherent rust.

T

Tankguard
Jotun cargo tank lining brand.
TBT
Tributyltin antifouling paint, hazardous in wreck dismantling and disposal.
Tegrabond
PPG Marine tie-coat for bonding silicone fouling release to underlying anti-corrosive epoxy.
Testex tape
Press-O-Film replica tape used in conjunction with a spring micrometer to measure surface profile.
Thermal spray aluminum
A spray-on metallic coating providing long-life corrosion protection in offshore splash zones and exhaust uptakes.
Tie coat
Coating layer specifically formulated to promote adhesion between dissimilar generic types, such as between epoxy primer and silicone fouling-release.
Tornado II
Jotun chlorinated rubber legacy antifouling brand largely retired in favor of tin-free SPCs.
Touch-up paint
Coating applied to localized damage in service, normally compatible with the underlying system.
Transom
Flat or curved stern surface above the waterline.
Tributyltin
Organotin biocide formerly used in antifouling paints, banned under the AFS Convention.
Triphenyltin
Organotin biocide banned under the AFS Convention alongside TBT.

U

UHP water blasting
Ultra-high-pressure water jetting at 30,000 psi or above used for paint removal and salt decontamination.

W

Warm dry humidity control
Practice of heating tank atmospheres above dewpoint to prevent flash rusting between blasting and priming.
Water blasting
See UHP water blasting; surface preparation using high-pressure water alone.
Waterline coating
A boot-top topcoat formulated for UV resistance and intermittent immersion at the load line.
Weldable shop primer
