Naval Surface Combatants glossary

The surface-combatant vocabulary: carrier arresting gear (AAG), amphibious vehicles (AAV-7A1, ACV), mission areas (AAW), and the destroyer, frigate, and amphibious-ship designations. Grounds each term in the combatant platform or the mission capability it belongs to, complementing the warship-systems sections.

AAG (Advanced Arresting Gear): Electromagnetic energy-absorbing arresting system replacing hydraulic Mk 7 gear on Ford-class carriers, manufactured by General Atomics.
AAV-7A1: Tracked amphibious assault vehicle in US Marine Corps service since 1972, being replaced by the ACV.
AAW (Anti-Air Warfare): Mission area covering defense of surface forces against airborne threats including aircraft, helicopters, and missiles.
ACV (Amphibious Combat Vehicle): BAE Systems 8x8 wheeled amphibious vehicle replacing the AAV-7A1 in US Marine Corps service from 2020.
Admiral Gorshkov-class frigate: Russian Project 22350 multi-role frigate of approximately 5,400 tons; lead ship Admiral Gorshkov commissioned 2018, followed by Admiral Kasatonov 2020.
Admiral Kuznetsov: Russian Project 1143.5 STOBAR aircraft carrier commissioned 1990.
Admiral Nakhimov: Kirov-class nuclear-powered battlecruiser undergoing extensive modernization at Sevmash since 1999.
Aegis Combat System: Although naval, integrates with maritime domain awareness picture for high-end threats.
AGM-158C LRASM: Long Range Anti-Ship Missile derived from the JASSM-ER, deployed on US Navy surface ships and aircraft.
AGS (Advanced Gun System): 155 mm naval gun fitted to Zumwalt-class destroyers, whose Long Range Land Attack Projectile program was canceled in 2016.
Akizuki-class destroyer: JMSDF general-purpose destroyer class of four ships commissioned 2012 to 2014, displacing about 6,800 tons full load.
Alsace: French Navy FREMM-DA air-defense variant frigate D656, commissioned 2022 by Naval Group at Lorient.
America-class LHA: US Navy amphibious assault ship class led by USS America LHA-6 commissioned 2014, followed by USS Tripoli LHA-7 and USS Bougainville LHA-8.
Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW): Operations to detect and neutralize submarines.
Aquitaine-class frigate: French Navy designation for FREMM multi-mission frigates, lead ship Aquitaine D650 commissioned 2012.
Arleigh Burke-class destroyer: US Navy guided-missile destroyer class, lead ship USS Arleigh Burke DDG-51 commissioned 1991, built by Bath Iron Works and Ingalls Shipbuilding.
Arrowhead 140: Babcock International frigate design adopted as Royal Navy Type 31 Inspiration-class, derived from the Iver Huitfeldt-class.
Asahi-class destroyer: JMSDF guided-missile destroyer class of two ships JS Asahi DD-119 commissioned 2018 and JS Shiranui DD-120 commissioned 2019.
Aster 15: MBDA short-to-medium range surface-to-air missile with 30 km range.
Aster 30: MBDA long-range SAM with 120 km class range, Block 1NT for ABM.
Aster 30 Block 1NT: New-technology variant of Aster 30 providing exo-atmospheric ballistic missile defense capability for European navies.
Atago-class destroyer: JMSDF Aegis-equipped guided-missile destroyer class, JS Atago DDG-177 commissioned 2007 and JS Ashigara DDG-178 commissioned 2008.

CODOG: Combined Diesel or Gas turbine arrangement in which the diesel and turbine drive the shafts alternately, not together.
Constellation-class frigate: US Navy FFG-62 guided-missile frigate based on the Italian FREMM design, lead ship under construction at Fincantieri Marinette Marine.
CVN: Nuclear-powered aircraft carrier hull symbol.
CVX: Republic of Korea Navy future light aircraft carrier program intended to operate F-35B aircraft.
