Tornado
A 20-foot catamaran designed by Rodney March in 1967, an Olympic class from 1976 to 2008.
TP52
The Transpac 52 grand prix one-design class.
Trade Winds
Persistent easterly winds in the tropics.
Transat Jacques Vabre
A biennial double-handed transatlantic race from Le Havre, first run in 1993.
Transpacific Yacht Race
The biennial offshore race from Los Angeles to Honolulu, first run in 1906.
Trimaran
Three-hulled vessel type used in offshore racing.
Trimmer
A crew member specializing in adjusting a particular sail.
True wind
Actual wind direction and strength independent of the ship's motion.
True Wind Angle (TWA)
The angle of the true wind relative to the yacht's heading.
Trustees (America's Cup)
The trustees of the America's Cup Deed of Gift, charged with safeguarding the trophy and its terms.
Twelve Metre (12 Metre)
A development class used for the America's Cup from 1958 to 1987.

U

Ultim
A class of 32-meter ocean-racing trimarans, used in events such as the Route du Rhum Ultim category.
UNCL
Union Nationale pour la Course au Large, the French national offshore racing body and co-administrator of the IRC rule.
Upwind
The direction from which the wind is blowing, opposite of downwind.
US Sailing
The national governing body for sailing in the United States.

Valencia
Spanish city that hosted the America's Cup in 2007 and the Deed of Gift Match in 2010.
Vang
Rope steadying the peak of a gaff or boom.
Vendee Globe
Solo, non-stop, non-assisted round-the-world IMOCA race held every four years.
VO65
The Volvo Ocean 65 one-design offshore monohull, introduced for the 2014-2015 edition.
VO70
The Volvo Open 70 box-rule offshore monohull, used from 2005 to 2012.
Volvo Ocean Race
Former name of The Ocean Race.

Watch System
Traditional four-on, eight-off three-watch or two-watch system, with the dog watch from 1600 to 2000 divided into two two-hour watches.
Waterline Length
The length of the hull at the waterline, central to displacement hull-speed calculations.
Weather Helm
Tendency of a sailing vessel to head into the wind.
Whitbread Round the World Race
Original name of the Volvo and Ocean Races.
Winch
Powered drum for hauling on ropes or wires.
Windward
Toward the wind.
Wing Sail
A rigid or semi-rigid airfoil used in place of soft sails, as on the AC72 and AC50.
World Sailing
Sport's international governing body, founded 1907 as IYRU.
