- Universal Fairlead
- Multi-roller fairlead, see Fairlead Universal.
- USHA Martin
- Indian manufacturer of steel wire ropes and synthetic ropes, including mooring and offshore products.
- UWILD
- Underwater Inspection in Lieu of Drydock class notation permitting alternate in-water surveys for eligible vessels.

- Veering Chain
- Paying out anchor cable in a controlled manner using the windlass.
- Vertical Windlass
- Windlass with the gypsy on a vertical shaft, common on small craft and some naval vessels.
- Virtual Mass Coefficient (Cm)
- PIANC 2002 WG33 factor accounting for entrained water mass in berthing energy calculations.
- Vryhof
- Anchor designer supplying drag embedment anchors for floating wind moorings.

- Warping Drum
- Smooth drum on the side of a winch or windlass used for warping the ship by hauling on a line wound around it.
- Warping Head
- Synonym for warping drum or capstan head.
- Weathervaning
- Tendency of a moored vessel, especially on a single point mooring, to align with the prevailing environmental load.
- Wildcat
- See gypsy.
- Winch (Mooring)
- Powered drum machine used to handle a mooring line, often with constant tension control and warping head.
- Wire rope
- Rope made of steel strands.
- Wire Rope Tail
- Short wire connection between a synthetic mooring line and an end fitting, occasionally used in OCIMF mixed mooring systems.
X
- X-Bitt
- Cross or X-pattern bollard formed by intersecting bitts at right angles, providing several lead directions.
Y
- Y-Type Bollard
- Bollard with a flared head shaped to retain mooring eyes and prevent jumping under load.
- Yokohama Pneumatic Fender
- Inflatable pneumatic fender used as ship-to-ship and tug-to-ship cushion.
Z
- Zero Tension Splice
- Splice configuration in HMPE rope designed to maintain full strength when not under significant tension during handling.
- Zinc Coating
- Corrosion protection for chains and fittings.
