A-frame LARS: Articulated overboarding structure mounted on a deck that swings an ROV cage or AUV outboard of the vessel side or stern for launch and recovery.
A18-D: Mid-size diesel-recharge AUV from ECA Group rated to 3,000 m for hydrographic and rapid environmental assessment work.

Acoustic release: Mooring component that frees a subsurface package on receipt of a coded sonar signal.
Active Heave Compensation: Crane/winch system that counters vessel heave in real time using hydraulics.
ADCP: Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler used in port channels to monitor currents.
Ageotec Pollux: Italian observation-class ROV from Ageotec used for inspection in inland and inshore waters.
AHC: See Active heave compensation.
API 17D: API specification for subsea wellheads and trees that governs the design of ROV-operable features on the tree.
API 17H: American Petroleum Institute recommended practice that defines ROV and ROT interfaces for subsea production equipment.
Argo float: Autonomous profiling float that drifts at parking depth and rises periodically to transmit temperature and salinity profiles via satellite.
ASV Global C-Cat: Catamaran-hulled survey USV from ASV Global used for shallow water bathymetric work.
ASV Global C-Enduro: Long-endurance solar and wind assisted USV from ASV Global designed for persistent ocean monitoring missions.
ASV Global C-Stat: Station-keeping USV from ASV Global designed to hold position over a subsea asset for extended monitoring.
ASV Global C-Target: Family of remote-controlled high-speed surface targets used for naval gunnery and missile training.
ASV Global C-Worker: Family of work-class unmanned surface vessels developed by ASV Global, later acquired by L3Harris Technologies.
AUV: Autonomous Underwater Vehicle.
AUV62-MR: Saab mine reconnaissance AUV based on the AUV62 platform with synthetic aperture sonar payload.
Auxiliary thruster: Secondary propulsor on an ROV or AUV that augments primary axes for fine maneuvering near a worksite.

Bathymetry: Measurement and mapping of seafloor depth.
BIOSwimmer: Tuna-shaped biomimetic AUV developed by Boston Engineering for confined-space inspection of ship hulls and ports.
Bluefin-12: Mid-size AUV from Bluefin Robotics with modular payload bays for survey and defense missions.
Bluefin-21: Heavy AUV from Bluefin Robotics rated to 4,500 m, notable for use in the 2014 MH370 search.
Bluefin-9: Compact lightweight AUV from Bluefin Robotics, now General Dynamics Mission Systems, used for shallow survey and search.
BlueRobotics: California manufacturer of low-cost thrusters, electronics and the BlueROV2 vehicle widely used in academic and small commercial work.
BlueROV2: Small open-architecture electric observation ROV from BlueRobotics offered in heavy and standard configurations.
Boston Engineering: US engineering company that developed the BIOSwimmer biomimetic AUV under a Department of Homeland Security program.
Bottom-crawling ROV: Class IV vehicle that traverses the seabed on tracks or wheels, typically for trenching, burial or dredging support.
Brushless DC thruster: Electric propulsor used on most modern observation ROVs and small AUVs, with the motor sealed and oil-compensated.
Bullet camera: Compact cylindrical underwater video camera commonly fitted to ROV pan and tilt units.
Buoyancy module: Distributed flotation collar attached to dynamic cables in a lazy wave or steep wave configuration.

C

C-Worker 4: Four meter diesel-electric work-class USV from ASV Global, now L3Harris, used for survey and subsea positioning support.
C-Worker 5: Five meter member of the ASV Global C-Worker family supporting offshore survey and IMR tasks.
C-Worker 6: Six meter USV in the L3Harris C-Worker family with greater payload capacity for offshore positioning support.
C-Worker 7: Seven meter ASV Global USV designed for persistent offshore survey and positioning duties.
Cage: Top-hat or garage structure deployed beneath the LARS that protects a work-class ROV during descent and acts as a tether interface.
Cellula Solus-LR: Long-range AUV from Cellula Robotics with hydrogen fuel cell power for extended endurance survey.
Cellula Solus-XR: Extended-range AUV from Cellula Robotics designed for under-ice and trans-basin missions on fuel cell power.
Centurion: Work-class ROV originally built by Perry Slingsby Systems and operated by Subsea 7, now under the Forum Energy Technologies portfolio.
Chirp sub-bottom profiler: Sediment imaging sonar that transmits a swept frequency pulse to penetrate the seabed and image shallow stratigraphy.
Class I ROV: Pure observation ROV equipped only with video for visual inspection tasks.
Class II ROV: Observation ROV with payload option capable of carrying additional sensors such as sonar or CP probes.
Class III ROV: Work-class ROV with multifunction manipulators and hydraulic tooling capability.
Class IV ROV: Towed or bottom-crawling vehicle used for trenching, cable burial and similar seabed intervention tasks.
Class V ROV: Prototype or development vehicle not yet in commercial production, often associated with research institutes.
Cougar XT: Compact electric ROV from Saab Seaeye in the inspection class size, used for mid-water and light intervention work.
Cougar XTi: Inspection-class Saab Seaeye ROV variant with iCON intelligent control architecture and higher depth rating.
CTD: Conductivity-Temperature-Depth instrument, the standard hydrographic profiler.

DARPA ACTUV: Anti-Submarine Warfare Continuous Trail Unmanned Vessel program that produced the Sea Hunter trimaran USV.
Daurade: Mid-size MCM AUV from ECA Group used by the French Navy for mine reconnaissance.

Deep Trekker DTG3: Portable observation ROV from Deep Trekker designed for shallow inspection by a single operator.
Deep Trekker Revolution: Battery-powered observation ROV from Deep Trekker with a rotating thruster pod for hands-free heading control.
Defender: VideoRay tethered observation ROV designed for defense, security and inspection missions with modular payload bays.
Depth rating: Maximum operating water depth certified for a subsea vehicle housing, typically expressed in meters of seawater.
DriX: Diesel-electric monohull USV from Exail, formerly iXblue, used for survey and acoustic positioning support.
DSPL: DeepSea Power and Light, a US maker of subsea lights and cameras widely fitted to ROVs and AUVs.
DVL: Doppler velocity log used to measure vehicle velocity over the seabed by bottom tracking acoustic returns.

ECA Group: French manufacturer of mine countermeasures and survey AUVs, USVs and inspection-class ROVs.

Falcon DR: Deep rated 1,000 m version of the Saab Seaeye Falcon observation ROV.
Fiber optic tether: Tether containing a single mode optical fiber for high bandwidth video and data, common on work-class and modern observation ROVs.
FMC Schilling: Common industry shorthand for Schilling Robotics after its 2007 acquisition by FMC Technologies, now TechnipFMC.
Forum Energy Technologies: US subsea equipment maker whose ROV brands include Perry, Sub-Atlantic and the XLX-C and XLR-C work-class ROVs.
Forum Mohican: Compact electric inspection-class ROV from Forum Energy Technologies Sub-Atlantic brand.
Forum Perry XLX-200: Heavy work-class ROV from Forum Energy Technologies in the 250 horsepower hydraulic class.
