Globe valve: Throttling valve with disc on stem, used for steam and high pressure water service.
Gravity disc: Sized ring in a conventional purifier that defines the position of the oil-water interface based on fuel density.
Grease Trap: Plumbing device intercepting fats, oils, and grease from galley drains before discharge to the sewage system.
Grinder Pump: Pump with built-in cutter for handling sewage solids in vacuum systems.
Grundfos: Danish manufacturer of centrifugal pumps used in many marine fresh water and sanitary applications.
Grundfos CR: Vertical multistage centrifugal pump used as hydrophore, jockey, and feed pump.

Head (Pump): Energy per unit weight imparted by a pump to the fluid, expressed in meters of fluid column.
Heat Recovery Steam Generator: Boiler producing steam from exhaust gas of diesel engines or turbines.
Heating coil: Steam or thermal-oil coil in a fuel tank used to maintain residual fuel at pumpable viscosity.
Helical Screw Pump: Common designation for a single screw, twin-screw, or three-screw positive displacement pump.
Helically-Coiled Boiler: Boiler design with coiled water tubes around the furnace, used in small package units.
HFO Booster Module: Skid-mounted unit comprising feed and booster pumps, heaters, and viscotherm for fuel injection systems.
High-Pressure Cylinder: Second-stage cylinder of a reciprocating air compressor delivering air to the receiver.
High-Speed Separator: Disc-stack centrifuge running at very high g-force for efficient fuel and lube oil cleaning.
Holding tank: shoreside tank for sewage or ballast reception.
Horizontal Pump: Pump with shaft axis horizontal, common on engine room cooling and transfer duties.
Hot Well: Tank receiving condensed steam and returns for feed back to the boiler.
Hot-Surface Ignition: Burner ignition system using a glow plug or hot element instead of spark electrode.
HV Compressor: Hatlapa HV series of vertical starting air compressors.
Hydraulic power pack: Self contained pumps, tank, and accumulator unit serving steering gear or cargo system.
Hydraulic Pump: Pump delivering oil to hydraulic actuators, typically axial piston or vane type.
Hydrophore: Pressurized tank with air cushion supplying domestic fresh and salt water.
Hypochlorite Dosing: Continuous chlorine injection for biofouling control or potable water disinfection.

Idle Sludge Discharge: Periodic empty-bowl discharge cycle in a centrifugal separator to flush accumulated solids.
Immersion Heater: Electric heater inserted into a fluid for tank heating, often used as a fuel preheater.
IMO AB: Swedish manufacturer of screw pumps, now part of Colfax Fluid Handling.
IMO ACE: Three-screw pump series from IMO AB used for fuel oil and lube oil duty.
IMO ACF: Three-screw pump series for fuel transfer service.
IMO ACG: Three-screw pump series used as fuel oil booster pumps.

Impeller: Rotating element of a centrifugal pump imparting energy to the fluid.
In-Line Pump: Pump with suction and discharge nozzles aligned on the same axis for installation in straight pipework.
Inducer: Axial pre-impeller fitted ahead of a centrifugal impeller to improve suction performance.
Industrial Boiler: Common term for large oil-fired marine auxiliary or steam plant boilers.
Inert gas blower: Flue or generator gas blower delivering inert gas to cargo tanks.
Inlet Strainer: Filter screen on pump suction protecting impeller and sealing surfaces from solids.
Insert Tube: Sleeve fitted inside boiler tubes to control circulation or protect against erosion.
Iron Pump: Danish manufacturer of marine pumps for cargo, ballast, and engine room services.
ITT Goulds: US-headquartered manufacturer of centrifugal and process pumps used in marine and offshore service.

J.P. Sauer & Sohn: German manufacturer of reciprocating piston air compressors for marine starting and service air.

Jacket Water Cooler: Plate or shell-and-tube heat exchanger transferring engine jacket water heat to seawater.
Jacket Water Pump: Pump circulating fresh water through the main engine jacket cooling system.
Jet Pump: Pump using motive fluid through a venturi to entrain and pump a second stream.
Jets Suite: Integrated vacuum sewage and treatment package from Jets Vacuum.
Jets Vacuum: Norwegian manufacturer of vacuum collection systems for black water on cruise and offshore vessels.
Jockey Pump: Small pump maintaining fire main pressure to compensate for minor leakage without starting the main fire pump.

Lobe Pump: Positive displacement pump using two or more rotating lobes, used for sludge and viscous fluids.
Low NOx Burner: Burner designed to limit nitrogen oxide formation in flue gas.
Low Pressure Cylinder: First-stage cylinder of a reciprocating air compressor.
Low Suction Cutoff: Automatic protection stopping a pump on loss of suction pressure or level.
Lube Oil Pump: Pump circulating lubricating oil from the sump to the engine bearings and cooling system.
Lube oil purifier: Centrifugal separator removing water and solids from system oil.

MacGregor: Common type of folding steel hatch cover.
Main Engine Driven Pump: Pump driven directly by the main engine crankshaft or gearbox.
MAN ES Hyperion: MAN Energy Solutions branded compressor and process equipment family.
Manifold Block: Forged or cast block containing multiple valves used in pump or hydraulic systems.
MARPOL Annex I: Prevention of pollution by oil.
MARPOL Annex IV: Prevention of pollution by sewage.

Multistage Pump: Centrifugal pump with multiple impellers in series developing higher head, used for boiler feed and high-pressure duty.
Mycom: Japanese manufacturer of industrial refrigeration compressors used in fish factory and large refrigeration plants.

Naniwa Pump: Japanese manufacturer of marine centrifugal pumps for cooling, transfer, and cargo service.
Naniwa Self-Priming Pump: Self-priming centrifugal pump series from Naniwa for bilge and ballast duty.
Net Positive Suction Head: Pressure available at pump suction above the vapor pressure of the fluid, critical for cavitation prevention.
Non-Return Valve: Valve permitting flow in only one direction, also called a check valve.
NPSHa: Net positive suction head available, derived from the system geometry and conditions.
NPSHr: Net positive suction head required by the pump to operate without cavitation.

Oil Content Meter: Sensor measuring ppm oil in OWS discharge water, required by MARPOL Annex I Regulation 14.
Oil Discharge Monitoring Equipment: ODME measuring oil content of slops discharged from cargo tanks of crude oil tankers.
Oil Recovery Pump: Pump returning separated oil from the OWS oil tank to the sludge tank.
Oil Water Separator: Equipment removing dispersed oil from bilge water to comply with the 15 ppm MARPOL discharge limit.
Oil-Fired Auxiliary Boiler: Boiler firing heavy fuel oil or marine diesel oil to generate process and heating steam.

Partial Discharge: Separator cleaning mode in which sludge is ejected without losing all bowl contents.
Peerless Pump: US manufacturer of fire and general service pumps used on some marine projects.
Peristaltic Pump: Positive displacement pump in which fluid moves through compressed flexible tubing, used for chemicals and sludge.
Pinion Steering Gear: Steering arrangement using rack and pinion, applied on some small craft.

Plate Evaporator: Fresh water generator using titanium plate heat exchangers as evaporator and condenser.
Plate Heat Exchanger: Heat exchanger using stacked plates with gaskets for compact heat transfer.
Plunger Pump: Positive displacement pump with solid plunger reciprocating through a stationary seal, used for high-pressure duty.
Polishing filter: Final filter on lube oil system, often centrifugal type.
Porsgrunn: Norwegian steering gear manufacturer historically associated with Norwegian shipbuilding.
Positive Displacement Pump: Pump that delivers a fixed volume per cycle regardless of head, including screw, gear, lobe, and reciprocating types.
Potable Water: Water meeting the EPA National Primary Drinking Water Regulations and the VSP supplementary criteria for shipboard use.
Pour point depressant: Additive lowering pour point of waxy distillates.
Power Pack: Self-contained motor, pump, and reservoir unit supplying hydraulic power to steering gear or deck machinery.
PPM Bilge Alarm: Audible and visual warning when bilge water OCM measures above 15 ppm of oil.

Purifier: Centrifuge with water seal removing free water and solids from fuel oil.
