Extended Operational and Trade Vocabulary
Marine Cathodic Protection and Anodes glossary (page 2)
The cathodic-protection vocabulary: active sacrificial and impressed-current anodes, active-passive metals (stainless steel, titanium) in seawater, the Ag/AgCl reference electrode for potential measurement, and the polarization and current-demand terms. Grounds each term in the corrosion-control method or the measurement standard it belongs to.
271 defined terms.

S
- Submerged Hull
- The wetted hull below the waterline that constitutes the principal CP load for a ship.
- Sulfate-Reducing Bacteria
- Anaerobic microorganisms whose activity drives microbiologically influenced corrosion of steel in seawater and mud.
T
- Test Lead
- An insulated cable that connects a reference electrode or test point to a meter for CP measurement.
- Test Station
- A surface termination giving access to permanent reference electrodes and structure connections for CP measurements.
- Tianjin Mengwang Group
- A major Chinese manufacturer of aluminum sacrificial anodes for the marine and offshore market.
- Titanium Anode
- A titanium substrate anode, normally coated with mixed metal oxides or platinum, used as the inert ICCP anode.
- Titanium Passive
- Passive titanium with potential near 0.0 V vs Ag/AgCl in seawater.
- Transformer Rectifier
- Combined transformer and rectifier unit supplying DC to thrusters, drives, or shore conversion equipment.
U
- Ultrasonic Thickness Gauging
- Non-destructive measurement of plate thickness using ultrasonic pulse echo techniques for corrosion assessment.
- Under-Protection
- A condition of less negative potential than the CP criterion, indicating insufficient protective current.
- Underwater Hull CP
- The CP design for the wetted hull, sized for the dry-dock interval at current densities of about 5 to 15 mA/m^2 on coated steel or 50 to 100 mA/m^2 on damaged areas.
- UT Survey
- A thickness-measurement campaign using ultrasonic gauges to track corrosion of hull plating and internal members.
- Utilization Factor
- The fraction of anode mass actually delivered as charge before the anode is considered consumed.
V
- Vector Cathodic Protection
- A commercial supplier of cathodic protection products and services.
- Voltage Gradient
- The spatial variation of potential in the electrolyte around an anode or holiday.
W
- Waterline Corrosion
- Accelerated corrosion in the splash zone above the immersed area, where CP current cannot reach.
- Welded Hull Anode
- A sacrificial anode permanently welded to the hull plating, typically through its steel core.
