Extended Operational and Trade Vocabulary
Marine Surface Preparation and Coatings Application glossary (page 2)
The surface-preparation vocabulary: abrasive blast cleaning and the anchor profile, abrasive metering valves and recyclability (steel grit versus garnet), adhesion measured by pull-off, and the substrate-preparation and application-condition terms. Grounds each term in the blasting method or the coating-application standard it belongs to.
273 defined terms.

U
- UHP water jetting
- Ultra-high-pressure water jetting at above 1700 bar, used for paint removal and surface preparation without abrasive.
- Ultrasonic thickness gauge
- Instrument used to measure coating thickness on non-ferrous substrates and steel plate thickness in ship surveys.
- Underwater Hull Coating
- Antifouling and anticorrosive coating system applied to the underwater portion of a vessel below the boot topping.
V
- Vacuum Blast
- Surface preparation method covered by ISO 8504-2 in which the blast nozzle is surrounded by a shroud connected to a vacuum that recovers spent abrasive and debris.
- Vaisala
- Finnish manufacturer of meteorological and humidity measurement instruments including the HM41 handheld humidity and temperature meter.
- Venturi Nozzle
- Blast nozzle with a converging-diverging internal profile that accelerates abrasive to supersonic velocity, increasing productivity over straight-bore nozzles of equal throat diameter.
W
- Wa 1
- ISO 8501-4 preparation grade for light water jetting removing loose matter.
- Wa 2
- ISO 8501-4 preparation grade for thorough water jetting where most foreign matter is removed.
- Wa 2.5
- ISO 8501-4 preparation grade for very thorough water jetting where staining is limited to randomly dispersed light discoloration.
- Wa 3
- ISO 8501-4 preparation grade for water jetting to visually clean steel with no visible residues.
- Wagner
- German and US manufacturer of airless spray equipment.
- Wet film thickness
- Thickness of a freshly applied coat measured with a comb gauge before solvent evaporation.
- Wheelabrator
- US manufacturer of centrifugal wheel blast machines.
- Whip Hose
- Short flexible spray hose connecting the main fluid line to the spray gun.
- White metal blast
- Sa 3 / SSPC-SP 5 preparation grade, the highest standard of blast cleaning.
- WJ-1
- SSPC-SP 12 water jetting cleanliness condition where the surface is free of visible matter when viewed without magnification.
- WJ-2
- SSPC-SP 12 water jetting cleanliness condition allowing random staining of no more than 5 percent of each unit area.
- WJ-3
- SSPC-SP 12 water jetting cleanliness condition allowing random staining of no more than 33 percent of each unit area.
- WJ-4
- SSPC-SP 12 water jetting cleanliness condition allowing all loose rust, loose mill scale, and loose coatings to be removed with tightly adherent matter permitted to remain.
- WRAS Approval
- Water Regulations Advisory Scheme approval in the UK confirming a product is suitable for contact with potable water.
Z
- Zinc silicate
- Inorganic zinc-rich primer based on ethyl silicate or alkali silicate binder.
- Zinc-Rich Epoxy
- Anticorrosive primer with zinc dust loading typically 80 percent or more by weight in the dry film bound by epoxy resin providing galvanic protection to steel.
- Zinc-rich primer
- Anti-corrosion primer for steel.
