- Water mist system
- Local application fire fighting system in machinery spaces under SOLAS II-2/10.
- Water-level detector
- SOLAS XII/12 requires audible and visual alarm in cargo holds, ballast tanks forward of collision bulkhead, and dry spaces of bulk carriers.
- Watertight doors operation
- SOLAS II-1/22 requires watertight doors to be kept closed during navigation except as specifically permitted.
- Watertight integrity (passenger ship)
- SOLAS II-1/22 requires masters' instructions on operation of watertight doors, side scuttles, gangways, and cargo ports.
- Weather routeing
- SOLAS V/34 references and IMO resolution A.528(13) recommend use of weather routeing services.

- Chapter added by 2002 SOLAS Conference, mandatory from 1 July 2004.

- Yard date
- Date of contract for construction; used with keel-laying and delivery dates for amendment applicability in SOLAS II-1.
- Yaw alarm
- BNWAS audible alarm escalation pattern per IMO MSC.128(75), with bridge, officer-back-up, and master/wider alarms.
Z
- Zero-discharge requirement
- While addressed under MARPOL, certain SOLAS II-2/4 oil-fuel and bilge separation provisions cross-reference discharge prohibitions.
- Zone (fire control)
- SOLAS II-2/9.2 main vertical zones not exceeding 40 m in length, separated by A-60 divisions.
- Zone (security level)
- ISPS Code Part A levels 1 (normal), 2 (heightened), and 3 (exceptional), communicated by Administration under SOLAS XI-2/3.
